The Return of the King: The Lion King Live-Action Review

Erin Gurtner’23, Staff Writer

This summer, The Lion King came out on July 19, 2019.  If you remember watching the animated version when you were a kid, then you should definitely give the live action version a try. The Lion King is about a savanna filled with so many animals and there is a king, Mufasa, who is a lion.  He and the queen just had a baby cub, Simba. Scar, Mufasa’s brother, is not pleased about the “new king” and he kills Mufasa. Scar convinces Simba that he killed him, which makes him run away and now the savanna is run by Scar. Simba goes off to the jungle where he meets some new friends, Timon and Pumbaa. Simba grows older and life goes on, but when the savanna gets very bad, one of the lionesses, Nala, runs off to find help, when she runs into Simba. Simba comes back home and saves the savanna. Scar runs away and Simba is now the rightful king.

Rotten tomatoes gave it a 53%, but the audience gave it an 88%. I think Disney did a great job of making the animals look real. The graphics of it are amazing. I very much enjoyed this movie.  It has very sad moments and very uplifting and happy ones as well. It is a good movie for families and sends the message that you will always have your family by your side. It is worth watching because it is a remake of the classic movie and people should give it a try. Most people who watched it loved the movie because Disney remade the classic and their usage of the graphics in it makes the animals look real.

There are some really good actors and actresses in this movie as well. James Earl Jones played Mufasa, just like he did in the animated version. Beyoncé played Nala, Donald Glover played Simba, Billy Eichner played Timon, Seth Rogen played Pumbaa, Chiwetel Ejiofor played Scar, John Kani played Rafiki, John Oliver played Zazu, and Alfre Woodard played Sarabi (Simba’s mother). Take an hour and fifty minutes out of your day to see this incredible movie!
