K-pop is Off the Charts!

K-pop is Off the Charts!

With K-pop becoming more of a global phenomenon every day, the music genre is inevitably breaking records both inside, and outside, of its category. On November 11, 2019, the Korean girl-group, Blackpink, made history as the first K-pop group to have a music video reach 1 billion views.

The video, titled “Ddu-du Ddu-du,” was released in June of 2018. It features the four members of Blackpink, Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rose, showing off their confidence and determination to thrive despite what people do to bring them down. With an exciting, upbeat melody and a simple, yet powerful, focal dance, many fans enjoyed the song. “Blinks,” the fanbase name, worked together for almost a year to garner the record-making amount of views.

While Blackpink has the title of being the first Korean music group to have a music video reach 1 billion, it is important to know that PSY, another Korean artist, was the first artist to ever unlock that achievement with his incredibly popular “Gangnam Style” video in 2012.

This is very big news for Blinks as well as all K-pop fans. The amount of recognition that “Ddu-du Ddu-du” received provides one more example of how K-pop is growing in popularity. Congratulations Blackpink and Blinks!
