Calling all superfans of the FRIENDS sitcom! Rachel, Joey, Chandler, Phoebe, Monica, and Ross are reuniting 16 years after their final appearance in May 2004. Unfortunately, filming has been delayed due to the coronavirus shutdown that ramped up in the United States in mid March. What we know so far is that the reunion will be unscripted and premiere exclusively on HBO Max, which was originally supposed to launch in May along with all 10 seasons of FRIENDS.
The plans for the HBO/Warner Bros streaming service effectively stripped Netflix’s permission to stream episodes on its platform in January 2020. FRIENDS was scheduled to leave Netflix in January 2019, but negative viewership responses extended FRIENDS’ residency until the final stroke of midnight New Years Eve, literally! The minute 2020 arrived, people watching the show on Netflix were traded the laughs for an error message. FRIENDS isn’t the only sitcom to return to its parent company from a Netflix stint. Another iconic show, a little comedy called The Office, is leaving Netflix in January 2021 for its new home on NBCUniversal’s streaming service “Peacock.” The Office has consistently been the #1 streamed show on Netflix with all nine seasons available ad free to members.
If you’re looking to reminisce, FRIENDS is there for you on cable channels such as TBS and Nickelodeon, which air reruns almost every day and night. For now though, we’ll have to wait a little longer to see our favorite friends on screen together again.
