A day before the Senate was scheduled to cast their final votes regarding his removal from office, President Trump, the 45th president of the United States, gave his State of the Union address to the United States House of Representatives. This was Trump’s third State of the Union address, which is an annual speech of a little over an hour, after which the Democratic Party delivers a responding speech. This year’s response was delivered by Gretchen Whitmer, the progressive yet pragmatic governor of Michigan. Notably, Nancy Pelosi ripped up the President’s speech after he delivered it because she claimed it was a “manifesto of mistruths” (The Guardian). Below is a brief overview of what else happened:

In the President’s rousing speech, Trump made statements such as, “our economy is the best it has ever been” (New York Times). In reality, our economy is prospering at the moment, but it is not the best it has ever been. We are in the middle of a trade war with China, and according to the BBC with, “rising tensions in the Middle East and fears over the health of the global economy have unsettled markets at various points, and led the US central bank, the Federal Reserve, to lower interest rates” (BBC). Among other statements regarding the health of the American economy, President Trump also brought special guests for the speech. The tradition of showcasing selected guests during this event began when Ronald Regan brought Lenny Skutnik in 1982. Lenny Skutnik, a prominent figure, had saved a woman’s life after a plane crashed in the Potomac River. According to another New York Times article, presidents bring guests in order to, “humanize the words on a teleprompter” (New York Times). Trump’s guests included, Tony Rankins, a veteran who recovered from PTSD, addiction, and homelessness, and Raul L. Ortiz, a top Border Patrol Agent, among other visitors.
