This year OC is proud to announce our class of 2018 Salutatorian as….*drumroll* Sophie Young! Sophie has been an active member of the OC community for the past four years and will continue on to achieve what is sure to be great success at Washington University in the fall. I had a chance to sit down with Sophie and ask her a few questions:

What sports and activities were you involved in at OC?

“At OC I participated in cross country, track, lacrosse, swimming, student council, GCI, and the Guatemala mission trip.”

Outside of OC?

“Outside of OC I play tennis, skied competitively, and enjoy other outdoor activities like hiking and biking.”

What were your favorite classes you took at OC?

“I have really enjoyed a lot of the classes I have taken, but I especially liked my language classes [Spanish and Italian].”

How did you feel when you found out you were Salutatorian?

“I was pretty surprised, but extremely grateful and excited. I definitely could not have

done it without all the support I have had from friends, families, and teachers

throughout high school.”

What are your plans for next fall?

“I am going to attend Washington University in St. Louis next fall where I will continue to learn, and run varsity cross country and track.”

What are you majoring in?

“I’m technically undecided at the moment, but probably something with languages or international studies.”

What are you most excited for?

“I am really excited to become a member of the WashU community next year. The classes seem interesting and I can’t wait to be on the XC/TF teams.”

How has OC prepared you for your future? (academically, spiritually, or socially)

“Oakland has prepared me for the future because it has given me the confidence to find what I am passionate about and then to pursue it. Teachers and peers have all influenced me, and the OC community helps girls to see that they are empowered, not just in academics, but also in life.”

What will you miss the most about OC?

“I will miss my friends and the community of amazing teachers and faculty. Of course I will also miss things like the picnic and spirit week…and maybe even my uniform!”

Any advice for underclassmen?

“Do everything that you can to participate in what OC has to offer. High school goes quickly so don’t hesitate to try new things and find what makes you happy.  Remember to work hard, but also to enjoy your time at OC!”

Good luck in the next four years and beyond, Sophie! OC can’t wait to see what you will achieve.
