The leaves are changing and the weather is cooling off, which means the official start of the Crew Fall Season 2019! The team is pleased to welcome Jessica Hughes as the new Head Coach for the year. As a D1 rower for the University of Wisconsin Badgers, Coach Jess honed her skills as an accomplished athlete and understands the value of a strong work ethic and rigorous training preparation. She plans to push her rowers both physically and mentally to reach their potential by building a strong aerobic endurance base in the fall, weight conditioning in the winter, and working up to high-intensity sprint training in the spring.

The team got to working right away with varsity water practices in August. With a new year came new recruits! Novice, or first year, teammates under Assistant Coach Ellen’s leadership started learning the ins and outs of rowing on land and on the water early in time for fall racing season. With a roster of 29 and counting, OC Crew sees no signs of slowing down!

The countless after-school and Saturday morning practice hours all led up to the kickoff race of the year at Head of the Ohio right here in Pittsburgh on October 6, 2019. This year, a record 7 boats were entered, which provided ample opportunity for everyone to experience the joys of race day! The two-person Pair and Lightweight Four brought home bronze for the Eagles as well as great racing from the 1st Varsity Eight, Novice Eight, the 2 Varsity Fours, and Lightweight 8. Senior Captain Elisabeth “Libby” Stofko is especially excited for what’s in store for OC Crew moving forward,

Going into it with a new coach who was so excited for the season just motivated everyone on the team, and set a really good tone for all of us! Our first race, Head of the Ohio, is always so fun since it is right in Pittsburgh. I think it was a great experience for the novice as well as varsity and was a super fun way to start off the fall racing season!”

October is a busy time for the team – The 1st Varsity Eight will be competing in the world-renowned Head of the Charles Regatta on October 20th in Boston, Massachusetts. Then, the whole team is off to Columbus, Ohio for the Blake Haxton and Speakmon Regattas the next weekend! Backed by a supportive coaching staff and a drive to succeed, the girls are prepared to leave everything out on the water and crush the competition this Fall Season!
